Meet Our Area!

History and Landscape

The Wolf River runs through the eastern part of the county. Nationally known for kayaking and fly fishing.  It is kept in a pristine state by the Dept of Natural Resources owning 90-95% of the frontage.  Also it was the source of development of the county with the railroad following it up through the county, floating logs down it, and the main military highway going north to Lake Superior.

White Lake Historical Society maintains a museum in the village of White Lake that has the history of the Crocker Hills and the logging industry.

Our landscape is heavily wooded, rural rolling hills...very green with northern hardwoods & pines.

Fall is the most colorful season because of the oaks and maple’s reds and oranges and yellows.  The crisp air, warm sun, and brilliant colors are breathtaking.

Winter is quiet and peaceful.  The forest and woods are beautiful with the leaves down and a blanket of snow covering everything.  Walking, snowshoeing or cross country skiing for those who enjoy the quiet sports and snowmobiling for those who like more speed.

Spring is a bit damp with the winter snow melt but you know summer is coming when you see the forest covered with trillium in May.  March and April is time for maple syrup production.  This is a real treat to be part of.

Summer is warm but not blistering hot.  The woods keep the extreme heat away and our lakes and river offer many summer activities.

Nightlife

If you’re looking for an active nightlife with a variety of activities this may not be the area for you.  Though there are local taverns to enjoy the company of friends and neighbors, many of us prefer to invite friends over to enjoy the campfires in our own backyards.

Recreation

The outdoor activities that people enjoy in this area are hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, biking, atv, canoeing, kayaking, boating, cross country skiing, camping.

Sports

The Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field and Hall of Fame are located just 1 ½ hours away in Green Bay.  We seriously frown on Chicago Bear fans and Minnesota Viking fans. Golf is available at many local courses with the most famous being Sentry Insurance’s pro course, Sentry World, in Stevens Point.

Shopping

There are many convenience stores for forgotten items like bread, milk and gas but most of us shop for groceries and necessities in Antigo (20 minutes away.)  It has a Copps, WalMart, Fleet Farm and Walgreens.

Because we are a rural area department store shopping is a drive to Wausau (1 hour away) or Green Bay (1 ½ hours away).  Many of us shop on line or through catalogs

But if you’re looking for antiques or auctions your days can be as busy as you want.  Rhinelander (45 minutes away) and Minocqua have many antique shops and the papers are full of auctions every week-end.

  Tourist Attractions

Couple of nice parks around Antigo....Jack Lake is county owned.

We have many campgrounds to choose from.

Bear Paw Outdoor Recreation Center offers many classes and lodging that draws a number of people...and they are the main sponsor of the Wolfman Triathlon held in September (kayaking, biking, and running).
